Wood-Fired Sauna Buying Guide: What UK Buyers Need to Know
A wood fired sauna is the one people actually want, and the one most likely to be talked out of by a supplier who would rather sell you an electric heater. The reasons given are usually about convenience, and they are true as far as they go. What they leave out is that the two are not really the same product, and that the regulatory hurdles are considerably smaller than the internet suggests.
This guide covers what you need to decide, in the order the decisions actually arrive: whether wood is right for you at all, how big a stove to buy, what the rules say about the flue, and what ownership is really like.
Wood or electric: the honest comparison
The differences that matter are these.
Heat quality. A wood stove produces a softer, more radiant heat with a stronger convection cycle, and the löyly from water on hot stones is noticeably better. Most people who have used both prefer wood, and it is not nostalgia.
Time. A wood-fired sauna takes roughly 45 to 75 minutes to come up to temperature from cold, against 30 to 50 minutes for a comparable electric heater. There is no thermostat and no timer. You cannot start it from your phone on the way home.
Ritual versus convenience. This is the real dividing line. Lighting a fire, feeding it and watching the temperature climb is either the best part of the experience or an obstacle between you and a sauna. Be honest about which you are. Owners who wanted convenience and bought wood use it far less than they expected.
Power supply. A wood stove needs no electrical supply, which removes the cost and disruption of running an armoured cable down the garden and, for a large electric heater, the possibility of needing a consumer unit upgrade. On a remote plot this can decide the matter on its own.
Off-grid capability. A wood sauna works in a power cut, on a field, at the bottom of an allotment. This is why nearly every mobile and trailer sauna is wood-fired.

Sizing the stove
Stove output is quoted in kilowatts and matched to the room’s internal volume in cubic metres. For a typical garden sauna, including most barrel saunas, a stove in the 6kW to 9kW range covers the usual sizes.
Three adjustments matter and are routinely ignored:
- Uninsulated glass and doors add load. A large glass front or a full glass door is a significant heat loss and pushes you up the range.
- Exterior surface area matters more than volume alone in a small British garden sauna exposed to wind. A cabin that would be comfortably heated indoors will feel underpowered outdoors in January.
- Oversizing is a real fault, not a safe margin. Too large a stove overheats the air near the ceiling before the stones are properly hot, giving you a sauna that reads hot on the gauge and produces poor steam.

The rules: less onerous than you think
Planning permission
In England, a garden sauna is normally treated as an outbuilding and usually falls under permitted development, meaning no planning application, provided it stays within the size, height and siting limits that apply to outbuildings generally.
Permitted development rights are reduced or removed for listed buildings, some conservation areas, flats and maisonettes, and properties where rights have been removed by a planning condition. Check before you order, not after. The Planning Portal is the authoritative starting point, and rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Building regulations: Part J is the one that matters
A wood stove is a solid fuel appliance, and solid fuel appliances in England fall under Approved Document J of the Building Regulations. This is the part people miss, and it is the part that keeps you safe.
What Part J is concerned with, in practice:
- Adequate air supply for combustion. A sealed, well-insulated sauna cabin does not have enough air on its own. Most quality wood sauna stoves are available with an external air intake, and on a modern airtight cabin you should specify one.
- Safe discharge of combustion products, meaning a correctly specified and correctly terminated flue, with height and positioning requirements relative to the roof and to nearby openings.
- Clearances to combustibles. A sauna is a wooden box containing a fire, so the distances between stove, flue and timber, and the heat shielding used, are not optional detail.
- A suitable hearth beneath and around the stove.
- A carbon monoxide alarm in the same room as the appliance, positioned as Part J sets out, and tested regularly.

The practical route: have the stove and flue installed by a HETAS registered installer. That gives you a compliant installation, the certification, and something to show an insurer. Which brings us to the point most guides omit entirely.
Tell your insurer
A solid fuel appliance in a garden building is a material fact for buildings insurance. Notify your insurer, and keep the installation certificate. An undeclared, uncertified wood stove in a timber outbuilding is exactly the scenario an insurer will use to decline a fire claim.
Living with one
Fuel. A session burns roughly 8kg to 12kg of dry, kiln-dried hardwood. You need somewhere dry to keep it, close to the sauna, and you need enough of it, which means a log store rather than a bag by the door.
Moisture content matters. Wet or unseasoned wood produces a smoky, slow, disappointing burn and tars the flue. Kiln-dried hardwood below 20% moisture is the standard, and a cheap moisture meter pays for itself.
Ash and cleaning. Empty the ash pan regularly. A stove choked with ash cannot draw properly.
The flue needs sweeping. At least annually, more if you use the sauna heavily. Book a sweep the same way you would for a house chimney.
Smoke and neighbours. Worth thinking about before siting. Position the flue so the plume clears roof lines and does not blow into a neighbour’s windows. If you live in a smoke control area, use an appliance exempt for that purpose and burn only authorised fuel.
The stones. Check them annually. Sauna stones crack and crumble with thermal cycling, and degraded stones restrict airflow and ruin the steam. Replace them when they start breaking up.
What to look for when buying
- A stove designed for saunas, not a repurposed log burner. Sauna stoves are built to hold and heat a substantial stone mass.
- An external air intake option on any modern insulated cabin.
- A complete, matched flue kit with the correct roof penetration components. Improvised flue arrangements are where fires start.

- A glass door or window if the sauna is outdoors, because in a British garden in winter, seeing out is a large part of the pleasure.
- A water tank option, if you want hot water without a supply, which many wood stoves offer as a side or rear tank.

Who should buy wood, and who should not
Buy wood if you want the best heat and steam available, you enjoy the process of lighting a fire, your sauna is outdoors, you have somewhere dry to store logs, and you are not trying to fit a session into a narrow gap in a weekday evening.
Buy electric if you want to use the sauna spontaneously and often, the sauna is indoors, you have no log storage, or the flue route is genuinely difficult. A sauna you use four times a week is better than a better sauna you use twice a month.
