Sauna Temperature Guide: How Hot Should a Sauna Be?

The right sauna temperature depends far more on the type of sauna and how much steam is in the air than on chasing the highest number on the dial. A traditional Finnish sauna, an infrared cabin and a steam room all feel intensely hot, yet their actual temperatures are wildly different. Understanding why is the key to a session that feels great rather than one that leaves you gasping on the top bench after four minutes.

This guide sets out the ideal sauna temperature for each type, explains why humidity changes everything, and gives safe starting points for beginners.

Ideal sauna temperature by type

Each kind of sauna works differently, so each has its own sweet spot:

  • Traditional Finnish sauna: around 80 to 90°C (176 to 194°F). This is the classic dry-with-steam sauna and the range used in the major health studies. For comfort and safety, most saunas should not exceed about 90°C.

Notice how the numbers fall as humidity rises. That is not a coincidence, and it is the single most important thing to understand about sauna heat.

Why humidity matters more than the number

Your body cools itself by sweating and letting that sweat evaporate. In dry air, evaporation works well, so you can tolerate 80 to 90°C comfortably. In humid air, evaporation slows or stops, so the same heat feels far more punishing. That is why a 43°C steam room can feel as fierce as a 77°C dry sauna.

In a Finnish sauna this is controlled by löyly, the burst of steam you get from ladling water onto the hot stones. Löyly can make an 80°C sauna feel like 100°C in an instant, without the thermometer moving much. This is why two people can disagree about whether a sauna is “too hot” at the same reading: the amount of water on the stones changes the experience completely. Where you sit changes the temperature

Heat rises, so a sauna is not one temperature. The upper bench can be 20°C or more hotter than the lower bench. Safe settings for beginners

Hotter is not better. Going beyond the comfortable range increases the risk without adding health benefit, and studies suggest consistency and frequency matter far more than peak temperature. Sensible practice:

  • Start at 70 to 80°C for 8 to 10 minutes if you are new to it.
  • Sit on a lower bench and build up gradually over several visits.
  • Hydrate well before, during and after your session.
  • Avoid alcohol, which dehydrates you and amplifies the heat’s effects.
  • Leave immediately if you feel dizzy, faint or unwell. There is no prize for staying in.
