The honest answer to how long a sauna takes to heat up depends on three things: how powerful the heater is, how big and well insulated the cabin is, and how cold it is to start with. This calculator works from the actual heat your room needs and the power your heater delivers, so you can switch it on at the right time rather than guessing. As a rule of thumb a well sized indoor cabin reaches temperature in 30 to 45 minutes; a cold garden barrel in winter can take well over an hour.

Real saunas warm up faster near the ceiling than at floor level, so the bench area is comfortable a few minutes before a thermometer high on the wall reads its peak.
